Artist profile

Anita Malfatti

Anita Malfatti (1889–1964) was a pioneering Brazilian artist whose 1917 solo exhibition in São Paulo introduced Expressionism and modern art to Brazil, sparking intense public debate and laying the groundwork for the landmark 1922 Week of Modern Art (Semana de Arte Moderna). Having studied in Germany and the United States, she developed an expressive style defined by vivid color palettes, emotional intensity, and dynamic brushwork, making her one of the central figures of South American modernism.
