Artist profile
Alfredo Volpi
Alfredo Volpi (1896–1988) was an Italian-born Brazilian painter who became one of the most influential figures in 20th-century Latin American modern art. Starting as a self-taught decorator and painter associated with the Santa Helena Group in São Paulo, Volpi developed a unique visual language bridging folk art and formal geometric abstraction. He is best known for his tempera compositions depicting architectural facades and festive flags (bandeirinhas), characterized by subtle color relationships, tactile surface textures, and dynamic spatial rhythms.
