Artist profile
Alberto da Veiga Guignard
Alberto da Veiga Guignard (1896–1962) was a master of Brazilian Modernism, celebrated for his ethereal landscapes of Minas Gerais, delicate portraits, and still lifes. Trained in Europe at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and in Florence, he returned to Brazil in 1929, bringing a highly singular style that fused lyrical expressionism with meticulous draughtsmanship. In 1944, at the invitation of Juscelino Kubitschek, Guignard moved to Belo Horizonte to establish the Escola Guignard, which profoundly influenced generations of modern and contemporary Brazilian artists. His atmospheric, floating depictions of Ouro Preto remain landmark achievements in 20th-century South American art, making his work highly sought after in both national and international secondary markets.
