Mary Sibande
Mary Sibande is a South African contemporary artist known for her sculptural and photographic practice featuring her alter ego 'Sophie'. Dressed in elaborate, vibrant Victorian gowns constructed from domestic labor uniforms, Sophie critiques historical narratives of race, gender, and post-apartheid labor in South Africa. Sibande represented South Africa at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011.
