Artist profile

Candido Portinari

Candido Portinari was one of the most prominent Brazilian neo-realist modernist painters. Known for his monumental murals—including the iconic 'War and Peace' panels at the United Nations Headquarters in New York—and empathetic depictions of rural working-class life in Brazil, Portinari synthesized European modernist techniques with uniquely Brazilian sociopolitical themes. His work is heavily cataloged by the Projeto Portinari and remains a cornerstone of Latin American modern art market and scholarship.
