Artist profile
Luiz Zerbini
Luiz Zerbini (b. 1959, São Paulo, Brazil) is a prominent contemporary Brazilian visual artist and a key figure of the 'Geração 80' (80s Generation) that re-energized Brazilian painting. Based in Rio de Janeiro, Zerbini works across painting, large-scale botanical monotypes, photography, sculpture, and immersive installations. His work bridges geometric optical abstraction with lush, complex depictions of tropical flora, urban landscape reflections, and historical narratives. Zerbini has held major retrospective and solo shows at institutions such as MASP in São Paulo, Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris, and the South London Gallery, and is also known as a founding member of the influential artist collective Chelpa Ferro.
